Problems

Engine Failing to StartThe Cat289D3 engine may fail to start, or have a hard start when the engine has any of the following issues:

  • Faulty or clogged injector nozzles
  • Damaged fuel injector pump
  • Mal-adjusted valves
  • Dirty fuel, dirt, or water in the fuel system

These problems are mainly brought about by exposure to dirt or water in the working environment especially when the various covers for these key components are damaged or not properly installed. It can also come about when the CTL is submerged.

The faulty parts must be repaired or replaced and extra care taken to ensure the parts are not exposed beyond the manufacturer's recommendations.

1) Failing Hydraulics

The hydraulic system is one of the most critical components in an SS or a CTL. The Cat289D3 hydraulic system may suffer from one of the following:

  • Defective hydraulic pump
  • Leaking hydraulic cylinder/system
  • Low hydraulic fluid levels
  • Clogged hydraulic filter
  • Dirty hydraulic fluid
  • Faulty hydraulic control valves
  • Worn hydraulic valves

Any issue relating to the hydraulic system results in several problems in the operation of the Cat289D3 SS or the CTL. The problems include

  1. Bucket or Boom runs very slowly
  2. Bucket or Boom fails completely
  3. There are uncontrollable jerks to the Bucket or the Boom when any action is initiated on them
  4. The hydraulic system, the hydraulic pump, or any other hydraulic-related device makes excessive noise when in operation
  5. Failing Lift Arm, or very slow-moving Lift Arm

Without the Boom or the Buckets being in proper working conditions, the Cat289D3 is incapacitated. The hydraulic system must be fully operational and any component with an issue must be repaired or replaced. Alternatively, if the issue is low or dirty hydraulic fluid, the fluid must be topped up or drained and a clean fluid added.

2) Loss of Engine Power

The Cat289D3 engine may lose power due to various issues in the engine. These issues could be:

  • Defective or leaking head gasket-This allows compression to escape from the engine and also allows oil, water, and other impurities to enter into the combustion chambers causing compression problems
  • Damaged fuel injection -Any issue relating to fuel injection causes a low power output from the engine. The nozzles could be clogged or damaged, reducing the amount of fuel available for combustion
  • Low Fuel Injection pressure - This affects the flow of fuel into the combustion chamber, thus compromising the combustion process
  • Clogged Air Filter-It reduces the amount of air available for the proper air-fuel mixture for combustion
  • Damaged Piston Rings- Damage to piston rings compromises the combustion/compression processes.
  • Other issues such as dirty fuel and maladjusted injection valves will lead to a low engine output.

These issues must be addressed promptly to return the Cat289D3 engine to its optimal performance.

3) Overheating issues

Normally, track loaders and skid steer engines operate at a temperature range of between 1500F and 1800F. When the temperature goes above 2000F, a warning light should come on to alert the operator. Overheating can be caused by:

  • Defective radiator cap which allows coolant/water pressure to escape
  • Malfunctioning Radiator which compromises the circulation of water/coolant in the engine
  • Coolant-related issues that affect the cooling system
  • Low engine oil or insufficient oil pressure which is not enough to cool the engine effectively
  • Malfunctioning temperature gauges fail to warn the operator when the cooling system is faulty or when the engine temperature rises above the limit.

Overheating causes extensive engine damage which might be very expensive to repair or may require engine replacement.

4) Failing Drive system

When the drive system fails, the Cat289D3 cannot move in any direction. A failing drive system is caused by:

  • Defective foot or hand controls-these may be causing the drive failure as they are unable to transmit the commands to the engine to initiate movement
  • Clogged or damaged Suction line which prevents fluid movement
  • Damaged Track mechanism which cannot move even when commanded to

Repairs or replacements must be carried out in the damaged areas/devices for the problem to be solved.

5) Electrical Issues

These may include:

  • Battery not charging- causedby loose electrical cable connections, faulty terminals, a bad battery cell, or a damaged alternator belt.
  • Faulty Starter-The starter may fail to kick-start the engine, or experience slow turns. This could be due to a damaged motor, faulty wiring, drained battery, or loose terminal cables.

These issues will prevent the engine from starting properly or may bring other problems that prevent the normal operation of the Cat289D3.

6) Machine Not Moving or Moving in a Jerky Manner

This problem is usually associated with damaged undercarriage or jammed tracks. The tracks could jam, become loose, or get broken. Further, the track frame may be damaged or clogged with debris or foreign objects that prevent their smooth movement.

7) Excessive engine Noise

The Cat289D3 may become excessively noisy due to worn mechanical devices in the engine or the drive train, a leaking hydraulic system, a damaged drive/hydraulic motor, or when the engine oil is highly viscous. The noise is a warning that something is seriously wrong and the issue must be rectified immediately.
