An overview of the Kubota L3130

Kubota is a Japanese company headquartered in Osaka. The company was founded in the late 1800s and has mastered the art of manufacturing agricultural machinery, tractors, engine, pumps and other products. The company has grown over the decades to post an annual revenue of over $20 billion in 2022. The products and machinery made by Kubota are trusted across the world. The Kubota brand signifies endurance, toughness and reliability, and this serves to endear it to its customers worldwide.

The Kubota L3130 is a compact utility tractor. It is a 1.5L 4-cylinder tractor that produces 32 hp. According to Kubota, the gear PTO is a massive 25.5 Hp, and the hydro PTO is 24 Hp or 17.9 kW. This model was introduced in 2003, and its manufacture stopped in 2007. The L3130 is offered in four variants, namely;

  • L3130F, which is 2WD
  • L3130DT which is 4WD and 8 speed
  • L3130GST; its 4WD and is 12 speed
  • L3130HST its 4WD hydro

The tractor stands out from the crowd because of the following features:

  • The rated RPM of the L3130 is 2100, and it's liquid-cooled.
  • You can opt for the hydrostatic, 8-speed or 12-speed transmission. You also get infinite 3-range forward and reverse gears. In the GST variant, you get a GST glide shift of 12 forward and 8 reverse gears.
  • The brakes use a wet disc while the clutch is dry type single stage.
  • The steering is hydrostatic, which makes driving the tractor easy and fun.
  • The wheelbase is 71.1 inches and 71.3 for the 2WD, and a ground clearance of 14.2 inches. This makes the L3130 easy for the tractor to access even challenging terrains.
  • It is armed with a 3-point category one hitch capacity that makes it compatible with equipment such as the rotary tiller, backhoe, front loading equipment and snow blower, among others.
  • The Kubota L3130 warranty is 2000 hours or 72 years, whichever comes first if the tractor is used for noncommercial purposes. If the tractor is for commercial use, the warranty is reduced to 2 years or 1500 hours, whichever comes first. For the limited powertrain, the warranty is slightly extended to 36 months or 2000 hours, whichever comes first.
  • The Kubota L3130 is designed to give the operator a good experience. You can operate the tractor for hours on end. This is made easy by user-friendly gear shifting, the comfortable height of the tractor and the comfy seat.
  • But as pointed out earlier, every tractor or machine has some issues. Over time, some issues get resolved by the manufacturer while others remain a nagging problem for the owners. The L3130 is reasonably priced, and most people who have invested in the tractor profess its capabilities and durability.

Is the Kubota L3130 durable?

The Kubota L3130 tractor has a solid warranty but is relatively shorter than the competition. The standard warranty for noncommercial usage is 72 months or 2000 hours. This warranty applies to the B, BX, L and LX series of tractors. Many owners' reviews from the online Kubota forums report using the tractors for more than 1500 hours without experiencing any major issues.

The tractor's durability is guaranteed, at least when you put it side by side with the warranty it carries. However, for commercial usage, the tractor may not hold strong against brands such as Massey Ferguson or John Deere which carry 5 and 10 years warranties, respectively.

In general, the Kubota L3130 and the Kubota tractors are built with solid, reliable materials, making them reliable and effective in whatever tasks it's thrown at. The tractor's engine and tranny hold well throughout the warranty period, and there shouldn't be any reason to worry. If well maintained, the tractor can easily outlive the warranty and even the brands that come with a many-hours warranty.

The common problems with the Kubota L3130

The L3130 tractor from Kubota is reliable and will not give you issues every other day. When properly maintained, the tractor will give you service for years without any need for major work on it. However, like every other tractor, the L3130 carries its fair share of problems which can influence a potential buyer's decision.

1) Poor shielding of parts

Tractors get thrown into the most challenging terrains and conditions; there are bound to be scratches, knocks and exposure to sticks, roots, stumps, dust and debris. Critical parts such as the radiator, oil pressure sensor, and transmission shift sensor are not shielded well. These parts are prone to damage when ploughing or working out on the ranch. The grill, even though swanky, does little to protect these sensitive components.

Solution

There is little you can do about the shielding problem because you can't relocate the exposed parts. The solution would be to avoid working in places that expose the parts. You can also consider adding a metal plate underneath the tractor for enhanced protection but take care not to block the radiator's access to cool air.

2) Front axle issues

Some L3130 owners have come forward with the front axle problem. The axle makes a cracking sound, or you might see puddles of fluid. The axle might pop out in certain instances. The lip of the axle seal wears out around the axle as you drive the tractor. In other instances, the seal can pop out of the housing. In both instances, the transmission fluid will leak whenever the axle seal is broken. This problem is quite common on the L3130 tractor.

There are two main reasons why the axle seal can get damaged.

  • Using the wrong transmission fluid
  • Cold weather can make the fluid thick, forcing the seal to pop out

Solution

The answer to this problem is usually to replace the seal. When the leakage is between the housing and the axle seal, you can pop out the seal, apply a sealant on the outer side, and force it back into the housing. In many instances, however, you will be advised to replace the seal with a new one. The work involved is tedious as you have to remove the housing and drain the transmission to install the seal. Remember to use the correct transmission fluid after replacing the seal to avoid future axle seal problems.

3) Front axle cracking

You might hear the front axle making a cracking noise while working.

Solution

The gears are the likely culprits. The gears might have crumbled, and this might require replacing. You might also need to replace the bearings.

4) The engine not starting or stalling

The engine is not cranking and, at times, stalling. This is normally a fuel problem. It could be a blocked fuel line. It could also be a bad battery, or the injection nozzles are stuck or faulty. In some instances, the fuel filter might be the cause of the problem or even bad timing.

Solution

The solution to this problem is to bleed the fuel tank if it is discovered a restricted fuel line is causing the problem. If the battery is the problem, then you will need to replace it. As for incorrect valve timing, have a Kubota tractor mechanic do the proper timing.

5) The motor starts hard

This is not very common, but several L3130 owners have reported it. The motor starts hard, and this makes it impossible to operate the tractor with ease. The problem could be a broken throttle or choke cable. It could be a broken choke cable or a malfunctioning cold start system. The problem has been traced to a defective injection pump, broken piston rings, or even fuel mixing with water.

Solution

Depending on the root cause of the problem, the solution varies. If it is the piston rings, then you will need to dismantle the engine. In the case of a broken choke cable, all you need to do is buy a replacement for the same. You will need the services of an expert to help you properly diagnose the problem.

6) Rust and corrosion problem

This is a problem that pops up once in a while on the Kubota online forums. Some owners report seeing rust on the tractor fenders and the body in general, even though there are no scratches to hasten this.

Solution

The answer to this problem might be to repaint the tractor if it is severe. You can check whether this problem is covered under warranty.

Conclusion

The Kubota L3130 tractor is a good compact utility tractor. However, you might be tempted to go for the next alternative when you put it side by side with other tractors in the same category. But after reading about the tractor's common problems, reliability and durability, you shouldn't have a hard time deciding in favor of L3130.
